SAP S/4 HANA Upgrade: How Quality Assurance & User Testing Made a Difference

Empowering employees for the future: How automation testing and end user training enabled a successful SAP S/4 HANA transformation.

In 2021, the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA) initiated a transformation project to upgrade its legacy financial and customer systems to the latest release of SAP S/4. The previous systems were more than 20 years old and lacked the advanced functionalities in the new release of the software.

To ensure a successful transformation, NTUA hired a System Integrator to implement the new SAP S/4 software. However, they required additional support to meet project obligations and timelines. As a result of our successful past engagements with NTUA, Avertra was engaged to provide assistance with two crucial workstreams: Quality Assurance Testing and End User Training covering SAP modules: FERC, HCM, ISU, MM/WM, PM, PS, FICO, CRM.

As a part of quality assurance assistance, the program leveraged System Integration Testing (SIT) and User Acceptance Testing (UAT) during the integration testing phase of the S/4 Hana program. Avertra defined the testing strategy, roadmap, and execution of the automation testing which acts as an accelerator for the project. The utility company can now utilize this technology for any future project or roll out to streamline the process without the need for manual testing.

This partnership also featured an SAP Enable Now Program where 45 training sessions were conducted for over 1,000 of the utility employees over a five week period in order to support the S/4 go live schedule. With Avertra’s own proprietary training, methodology and execution strategy, a recording tool was deployed to document all processes impacted with the S/4 HANA program. As a result, the partner led live training sessions for all users to ease onboarding, boost efficiency and output of the transformation. In addition, the utility has access to 95 reusable learning resources for training new hires and onboarding processes for the future.

NTUA’s S/4 HANA transformation go-live was a resounding success, delivering a modern and optimized financial and customer system. Avertra’s partnership was pivotal in ensuring project requirements were met through quality assurance and user testing services. End user training empowered NTUA employees to utilize the new system for their daily activities, and the training recordings will serve as a valuable resource for both existing and future employees. With the automated test scripts implemented during the project, NTUA can easily and quickly regression test the system after future modifications and upgrades. These measures have positioned NTUA to better achieve its future goals, with an efficient system and competent staff.

Looking ahead, NTUA intends to make use of the new SAP Enable Now documentation. To facilitate this, NTUA and Avertra are currently in discussions to design and implement an improved learning management process and system. This will help to further enhance NTUA’s use of the new system and ensure that employees are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed.

QA workstream (SIT & UAT)
“Due to lack of internal resources at NTUA, Avertra provided exceptional Quality Assurance (QA) services of NTUA’s S/4HANA system. They utilized a systematic approach to ensure quality of the S/4HANA system using accelerated SAP S/4HANA testing services. Highly effective Testing Plans and Test Scripts were formally developed and delivered to NTUA in a timely manner.”
